Rovers have reached a mutual agreement with Derrick Williams over the remaining months on his Ewood Park contract which has allowed him to join MLS side LA Galaxy.

The Los Angeles side have now announced Williams as their new signing on a two-year deal, with a 12 month option.

That brings an end to Williams’ four-and-a-half years at Ewood Park having joined from Bristol City in the summer of 2016. He played 152 times for the club, but just 11 times this season in what was an injury-hit campaign for the 28-year-old.

Williams, who has been out injured since December, was out of contract in the summer, with Rovers agreeing to his release ahead of the new MLS season which gets underway next month.

With the Republic of Ireland international holding an American passport, he won’t occupy an international roster spot, with Galaxy pleased to welcome him on board.

“Derrick is an experienced defender who has played at a high level in England and internationally,” said LA Galaxy General Manager Dennis te Kloese.

“We believe Derrick will strengthen our defence and add competition to the position. We are excited to have Derrick join the squad and look forward to his contributions to the club.”

Williams was named player of the season in his debut season at the club and played 45 of their 46 games in the League One promotion winning campaign of 2017/18.

A club statement said: “Rovers would like to thank Derrick for his efforts over the past four-and-a-half years and we wish him well in his future career.
