Gary Rowett is assessing an injury concern to striker Mason Bennett, as well as ruling out five players, for tomorrow’s game with Rovers.

Bennett scored the winner in this fixture last season, and also netted against Preston North End on Tuesday, but was forced off late on with an achilles problem.

Matt Smith is primed to start in his place, with Tom Bradshaw struggling with a similar to Bennett, with Rowett saying the Lions ‘have to be mindful of the amount of games’ before the international break.

Millwall were boosted by the return to fitness of influential defender Jake Cooper for the midweek win, but Rowett is set to be without a number of key players on Saturday, including former Rovers winger Connor Mahoney.

Mahoney, who left Rovers after relegation from League One in 2017, hasn’t featured for Millwall since November, and his injury has been a disappointment for Rowett.

Kenneth Zohore, Murray Wallace, Mahoney, Ryan Leonard and Maikel Kieftenbeld are all set to be out of action until the start of April.

Rowett told the South London Press: “Every time Connor has tried to kick on he has felt a bit of discomfort with the quad. It is frustrating. It looks like it could be the difference between now and the end of the season, how quickly we get some key players back so that we can rotate at the right times in the right games.”

A positive for Rowett was the return of Cooper however, with Millwall eyeing a late charge for the top six, sitting 10th at the start of play, nine points outside the play-off spots.

Rowett added: “Coops came through fine. That went unnoticed a little bit. It was a huge plus. It gives him another three to four days to strengthen. The more games he gets through the more strengthening he can do and that improves his chances of getting fit.”
