Sheffield Wednesday have appointed a third permanent manager this season.

The Owls have named Darren Moore as their new manager, replacing Neil Thompson who had been in caretaker charge for the last 13 matches.

Moore arrives from Doncaster Rovers where the 46-year-old had been in charge since July 2019. His other managerial experience was a 48-game spell in charge of West Bromwich Albion.

Moore is set to take charge of the Owls’ next game with relegation rivals Rotherham United, the sides separated by just one point ahead of kick-off.

Financial irregularities saw Wednesday docked 12 points at the start of the season, reduced to six upon appeal, but they remain six points behind fourth bottom Birmingham.

Defeat to Luton Town at the weekend, despite leading 3-2 at half time, means they have now lost their last four matches, leading to a permanent successor being found, with caretaker Thompson having won six of his 13 matches.

He was placed in charge after an ill-fated spell for Tony Pulis which saw him take charge of just 10 matches, taking seven points, the last of which was the Boxing Day draw at Ewood Park.

Pulis was in charge for just six weeks having replaced Garry Monk who was sacked in April.

Moore leaves Doncaster, who beat Rovers in the FA Cup in January, sixth in League One.
