Rovers have recalled Stefan Mols from his loan spell in Spain.

Mols was due to spend the season with CF Intercity in the Spanish fourth tier, but the midfielder has now returned to Rovers with his stay cut short.

The 21-year-old, out of contract in the summer, had made just a handful appearances for the Valencia-based club who haven’t played since December 20.

Rovers say game-time, as well as the coronavirus pandemic, have seen them recall Mols from his loan spell and he looks set to spend the remainder of the campaign with the Under-23s.

He has captained them at times over the last 18 months without making the breakthrough to the first-team, his sole appearance coming in the Checkatrade Trophy in 2017.

Mols is eligible to make his Rovers return for the Under-23s on Monday night when they travel to Manchester City in Premier League 2.

The club said: Rovers can confirm that Stefan Mols’ loan spell with Club de Futbol Intercity has been cut short.

“Due to a lack of game time and difficulties encountered in returning to Spain due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Rovers have recalled the midfielder from his loan, which was set to run until the end of the season.

“The 21-year-old has now returned to training with Rovers Under-23s, who he captained earlier in the season, and is eligible to play in Monday’s Premier League 2 Division 1 fixture away to Manchester City.”

Only goal difference separates Rovers and City in the table, with both a point behind leaders Chelsea at the halfway stage of the Premier League 2 table.
