Darren Moore reflected on a special win for his Doncaster side after a difficult period.

Doncaster were flying high in League One when their season was halted by an outbreak of coronavirus within the squad which forced the postponement of four of their matches.

They weren’t back in training until Tuesday, with some players back even later, while Moore added two new faces to his ranks to boost the numbers, though was still only able to muster seven subs.

But they booked their place in the fourth round in their first match since December 23 courtesy of Taylor Richards’ strike followed up by some organised defensive play to see out a clean sheet.

Ellery Balcombe made one fine save from Bradley Dack, but Doncaster were good value for the win, booking their spot in round four.

Moore was unable to call on several of his first-team regulars, still feeling the effects of the virus, but from those that were fielded, he was delighted with what he saw.

Moore said: "To get into the fourth round, we're really pleased because of the time we had off and the time we had to work, and we've had to reshuffle the pack.

"It has been difficult because there are individuals missing. But we've had to get on with it and prepare as best as we can.

"I'm pleased with that because of in terms of the time we had to work together, I look at what they did and they were absolutely superb, so I can't ask any more. They have rewarded themselves with the fourth round.”

It was the second meeting of the season between the two sides after they met in the Carabao Cup first round in August.

That was Doncaster’s first match back after lockdown, but they ran Rovers close, an Adam Armstrong penalty eventually seeing off the League One side in a 3-2 win.

They had led going into the closing stages, and Moore says they were able to negotiate them better this time around due to being more up to speed than they were in the August meeting.

He added: “The difference is we had more stamina than we had back then.

“I felt we ran out of gas, but today we were able to sustain ourselves more and stay in it. We could have used the ball better. But the other side of the game, our defending off the ball, was excellent.

"It's a special win for us."
