Former Rovers goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler is looking for his second club since leaving Rovers last summer.

League One side Fleetwood Town have announced the Canadian has left the club at the end of his short-term deal, despite starting 18 matches since signing, including their last fixture on Boxing Day.

Since then the Cod Army have parted company with Joey Barton, the club 10th in League One, and now allowed Leutwiler to leave on a free transfer.

The return to fitness of first-choice goalkeeper Joel Coleman, who has been out since September following his arrival in the summer from Huddersfield Town, and Alex Cairns also on the books, Fleetwood have opted against extending Leutwiler’s deal.

A statement read: “Town have opted against extending his contract and would like to thank him for his service and wish him well for the future.”

Leutwiler managed more appearances for Fleetwood than he did in his three years with Rovers, playing 13 times in all.

He signed from Shrewsbury Town as back-up to David Raya in 2017, and was kept on until last summer when he was released at the end of his contract.

Now 31, Leutwiler will begin the search for another club, having spent time in pre-season with Accrington Stanley before making the move to the Fylde Coast.

He has spoken in the past about a possible move to the MLS or his native Canada in a bid to push forward his international ambitions. Leutwiler won the last of his three caps in September 2017.
