Tony Mowbray hopes successive away games to finish 2020, and start 2021, will play into Rovers’ hands as they look to kickstart another run of form.

Rovers’ seven game unbeaten run has now become one win in six as they approach the halfway point of the season. Before then, they face Huddersfield Town tonight, and Birmingham City on January 2, by which point they will have played every side in the division once.

Mowbray feels his side have been able to go into any game believing they will win, as they will do this festive double-header, but they have struggled of late against teams who have set-up to defend and frustrate.

That includes their last two outings, a 1-0 defeat at Stoke City and the weekend’s draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

Looking ahead to what’s to come, Mowbray said: “We’ve got two back-to-back away games and as I’ve just said to them, I think we can win both games, because we can be more ruthless away from home because teams attack us and that leaves space in-behind them for us to exploit.

“Huddersfield away, they’re a football team who try and play and attack us which is good.

“Earlier in the season when teams didn’t have as much respect for us and were attacking us we were punishing them.

“Deep blocks are a conundrum for us, because if every team comes and sets up like that against us, things are going to be tough.

“Let’s see how these next two away games go.”

A clean sheet is on Mowbray’s mind, Rovers having failed to keep one in eight games since the win at Preston North End in October.

So too is the manager’s view that the squad are yet to deliver results on a consistent basis, with nine wins and nine defeats to their name, leaving Mowbray acknowledging he is waiting for more.

He added: “I expect this team to win every game, to be honest.

“We look forward to the return games of Bournemouth and Watford and teams like that because I feel as if we can take it to every team in this league and yet the reality is that we need to actually go and show that on the grass.

“We’ve just played one of the teams in the relegation zone and not won, so we need to improve and find a way to win these games with the talent we have in this squad.

“We didn’t quite do that, but I think that we are not far away from being a pretty good team in this league, but I can’t keep saying that every week without backing it up. We need to start turning these dominating performances into victories and three points.

“Football is a non-stop journey and we’re trying to make players better, improve the team by making the individuals better and collectively getting stronger.”
