The Brighton goalkeeping department has been a hot topic of debate for Seagulls fans – but one player who could be set for a January move is Christian Walton.

Former Rovers ‘keeper Jason Steele, signed in 2018 from Sunderland, has been an unused substitute in 12 of Brighton’s 13 Premier League matches so far, but is yet to make a league appearance.

Robert Sanchez, on loan at Rochdale last season, has been handed his opportunities between the sticks, with Australian international Mat Ryan having gone through a tough run of form.

That leaves former Rovers loanee Christian Walton who headed back to his parent club in the summer with a hope of pushing for first-team inclusion.

He looked to be ahead of Sanchez, the 25-year-old being a regular in pre-season, only for injury to strike in August in a pre-season friendly with Chelsea.

Ankle ligament damage sidelined him for several weeks, but Walton has since played for the Seagulls’ Under-23s side and now looks primed for a January move.

Walton played all 46 Championship matches for Rovers last season, but was also keen to test himself at his parent club after several spells out on loan, including the 2017/18 and 2018/19 campaigns at Wigan Athletic.

Sheffield Wednesday are one club to have already been linked with a move for Walton, and Brighton boss Graham Potter believes the best course of action after a tough first half of the season, could be to get him some regular game-time out on loan.

Potter said of Walton: "He's got really good attributes as well. He's an incredible young goalkeeper and we need to think about the right thing to do in January maybe.”

Walton was one of two goalkeepers to leave Rovers in the summer, as while he returned to his parent club, Jayson Leutwiler was released, then going onto join Fleetwood Town where he has become their No.1.

Andrew Fisher started Rovers’ Carabao Cup win over Doncaster in August, but was then allowed to leave on deadline day, joining MK Dons on a permanent deal, and the 22-year-old is getting regular game-time there after a loan spell last season.

Fisher has played 11 times for the League One side.
