Barry Douglas and Scott Wharton will both be assessed after coming off in Rovers’ win over Barnsley.

Daniel Ayala has resumed training with the squad, and will do so again on Monday, after more than a month out with a groin problem.

He could be required for Wednesday’s game with Millwall, though Tony Mowbray was hopeful that Wharton would be given the all-clear after coming off with a head injury in the second half.

The central defender, making his fourth successive start, received treatment after a clash of heads from a corner, with the club doctor making the decision that the 23-year-old couldn’t continue.

He was the second defender who needed to be replaced, as Barry Douglas limped off in the first half, with Amari’i Bell on in his place.

Providing an injury update, Mowbray said: “Barry Douglas, right from the off almost, felt his glute, the top of his hamstring.

“Barry is the most vocal and positive guy in the dressing room, he’s encouraging and driving the team so losing him was a blow to the team.

“We’ll have to assess it, it’s not a hamstring as such, I hope, the top of his buttock, he’ll get scanned and we’ll assess it.

“Scotty Wharton, it was a clash of heads, the doctor made the decision that he was coming off.

“I’ve had a long conversation with the doctor and hopefully if there are no (concussion) symptoms he’ll train on Monday as we prepare for Wednesday.

“I think losing him disrupted the team.”

Injuries to both Ayala and Derrick Williams handed Wharton his chance, with Rovers taking eight points from the four games he has started alongside Darragh Lenihan.

Joe Rankin-Costello was another defensive option missing from the Barnsley win, with the 21-year-old out for two months with a hamstring injury picked up last weekend.

Wharton will hope to keep his run in the side going for Wednesday’s visit of Millwall, but Ayala could be primed for a recall should he not make it.

Mowbray added of Wharton: “He’s four games in, I remember saying to him last week about not making a tough second game.

“He’s taken that on board, he’s been very dominant and composed with the ball.

“He made good decisions and it was a blow for him to come off. Hayden was a young boy thrown on, he’s not left sided.

“I should know tomorrow what the situation is defensively.

“Daniel Ayala is back on the grass training and we’ll have to see who we feel is the best option when we study Millwall and whether we’ll need a younger, athletic player who will be playing higher up the pitch or Daniel can stay in there and hopefully head some balls clear for us.

“Hopefully we’ll get that selection right.”
