ACCRINGTON boss John Coleman hailed his side’s performance at Swindon – likening their third goal to one scored by Lionel Messi and Barcelona.

Goalkeeper Joe Fryer’s comical early own goal set Stanley on their way before further strikes from Colby Bishop and the impressive Dion Charles put the Reds out of sight by half-time.

Victory moves Stanley into League One’s top 10 with games in hand on the sides above them after their coronavirus-enforced break earlier in the campaign.

Coleman said: "We played really well in the first half, created a lot of chances and missed quite a few as well.

“I have to give credit to Swindon because they had a go in the second half and we looked to counter but, in the end, we deserved to win the game.

“Our third goal is as good a goal as you will see. If that is Barcelona and that’s Messi finishing that, then it’s getting shown on TV eight times a day!

“We know we can play that kind of football and it is just about playing those spells longer and with consistency and scoring when you are on top.

“We have to start playing well for longer in games but we are still a young team and still learning. There is a great appetite in the squad.”

Stanley were gifted the lead when Akinwale Odimayo played a simple pass back to Fryer, who slipped as he attempted to clear and watched in anguish as the ball trickled over his line.

Fryer was also partly culpable for the visitors’ second goal in the 25th minute.

Cameron Burgess’s left-wing cross was volleyed goalwards by Matt Butcher and when Fryer came racing off his line to punch the ball away, Bishop nipped in to nod into an empty net.

Swindon’s nightmare first-half was compounded when Charles rounded off an excellent team move from close range to make it 3-0 seven minutes before the interval.

The struggling Robins at least stemmed the tide in the second half but are now without a win in three league games and only one point above the relegation places.
