Rovers’ unavailability list could be compounded by an injury to Adam Armstrong picked up in the defeat at Swansea City.

Barry Douglas missed the trip to south Wales as he became the third player within the squad to self-isolate as the Rovers squad continue to battle the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Armstrong came off with 10 minutes to go at the Liberty Stadium, having spent much of the afternoon holding his hamstring, but the 23-year-old was still Rovers’ biggest goal threat.

Bradley Johnson and Amari’i Bell were already self-isolating, and will miss tomorrow’s visit of Middlesbrough, while Douglas will be absent for both the games next week.

Thomas Kaminski is expected to miss out for a third consecutive match, with Aynsley Pears set to keep his place for the visit of his former club.

Joe Rothwell could return, with the midfielder having been one of nine players who would otherwise be considered to start, not involved at the weekend, but otherwise Mowbray is expected to have the same group to choose from again.

“Adam had a little twinge, let’s see what comes of that,” Mowbray said.

“You’re asking them to put their bodies on the line, the same players, every three days, it’s madness.”

Mowbray spoke ahead of the Swansea trip about the difficulties Rovers were facing with coronavirus, with members of the club’s backroom team having also been self-isolating of late.

Douglas, who had started the previous two matches, became the fifth player already this season to self-isolate which has left Mowbray unable to rotate his squad.

The Rovers bench had looked as strong as it had all season for the trip to Watford just four games ago, but the unavailability list has continued to grow.

Kaminski and central defender Daniel Ayala are both struggling with groin injuries, while Rothwell, himself just back from a period of self-isolation, has missed the last two matches with a back problem.

Elliott Bennett, Lewis Travis and Bradley Dack are longer-term concerns, leaving Mowbray having to continue churning out a similar side despite the run of seven games within three weeks inbetween the international breaks.

“Some of those are self-isolating for various reasons, some of them have had positive tests, others are because their family members have had positive tests, or people they live with,” the manager added. “The others are injured.

“We have a whole team of players who couldn’t perform out there, not just squad players, but first-team players, some of those with Covid, or their families have, and it’s not ideal.

“We’re digging pretty deep into our resources.

“When things balance out then I think we’ll be able to come to places like Swansea and show our quality.”

Armstrong meanwhile, has featured in Rovers’ last 95 matches since he last missed a Championship fixture, that coming against Brentford in August 2018.

He has 10 goals in all competitions this season and Rovers will be desperate to call upon his services as they welcome Ewood Park to Middlesbrough on Tuesday.
