Tony Mowbray believes decision-making on the ball is the biggest impression that Liverpool loanee Harvey Elliott has made on him.

Rovers made a deadline day move for Elliott who has played every minute of the two matches he’s been available for, coming up with a goal and an assist in the weekend win at Coventry.

That was a first senior goal for Elliott, who is chalking up the honours and accolades in the early years of his career, but shown incredible maturity since his switch from Anfield.

At just 17 years and 203 days he became the club’s fourth youngest scorer, and is set to make his Ewood bow for the visit of early season leaders Reading tonight.

His move to Rovers attracted a lot of his attention, while social media has been awash with praise for the teenager, though Elliott says his family and those close to him will keep him grounded.

As for Mowbray, he said: “I don’t think anyone will be getting carried away at our football club.

“We have to enjoy the talent that’s infront of us, we have to enjoy the purity of his football.

“Harvey is a hugely high quality footballer with the ball at his feet, he sees opportunity, makes wonderful decisions.

“Decision-making is the key thing for any footballer, when to release it, when to stay on it, when to play a long pass, a short pass, and practically every time he makes the right decisions.

“That’s why at a very young age he found himself at a club like Liverpool. We’re happy that we can play a small part in his development and give him an opportunity to help our team and club move forward.”

Elliott is the second teenager to make an impression on the first-team scene, Tyrhys Dolan having scored his first senior goal for Rovers against Wycombe, and backed that with another goal, and excellent display, in the 4-0 win at Derby.

The Coventry win was the first match that 18-year-old Dolan, who joined on a free transfer after leaving Preston, didn’t feature in since joining the club, and Mowbray has previously urged caution around the winger who had no senior experience prior to joining Rovers. And Mowbray believes Elliott and Dolan are very different cases, despite their talent.

He added: “With Tyrhys his main attribute when he burst onto the scene was his enthusiasm, his intensity, he fitted the way we play and brought a dimension to it that raised the bar.”
