David Raya has put an end to speculation over his Brentford future by signing a new long-term contract with the Bees.

Raya captained Brentford to a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals after their victory over Fulham last night, but has faced an uncertain future this summer.

Interest from Arsenal raised the possibility of a move to the Premier League for the 25-year-old Spaniard who left Rovers in a £3m deal last summer.

His agent had hinted at the possibility of submitting a transfer request in a bid to force through a deal, but Brentford held firm in their stance that Raya wouldn’t be sold.

And he has put pen-to-paper on a new deal through to 2024 and will now look to win back his place in the starting line-up with Luke Daniels having been preferred for the opening three matches of their Championship season.

The move that took him to Brentford from Rovers included several incentives, including a sell-on fee on any profit, as well as a promotion bonus should the Bees reach the top-flight, only for them to lose out in the play-off final to Fulham.

Rovers found their long-term replacement for Raya, who played 108 times in all for the club, this summer as they brought in Thomas Kaminski from AA Gent.

A delighted Thomas Frank told his club’s website: “We are very pleased that David has signed a new contract. He showed last year that he was a very important player for us and, for me, he is one of the best keepers in the league.

“He fits our style of play; he is really brave with his high line and takes everything that goes in behind, as well as crosses. He is strong in one on one situations and does a good job dominating his box. His distribution is good as well.

“Those are the key areas where he fits us really well. He made some big contributions in key moments last year and that’s something I want to see even more of going forward.”
