Rovers won’t change their approach on the road with Tony Mowbray hoping personnel can help improve their defensive record away from home.

Victory over Wycombe last weekend made it just two defeats in their last 19 Ewood fixtures but they have found things more difficult on the road in 2020.

Mowbray’s men have lost six of their last eight away fixtures, conceding 18 goals in the process, but did improve their points tally, and goals against column, last season.

They won seven matches in 2019/20, compared with six the previous year, and conceded nine fewer goals, a trend Mowbray hopes to continue this season, despite an opening day defeat at Bournemouth.

There they lost 3-2, as they did on their final match of last season at Luton Town, but Mowbray won’t be looking to contain any opposition away from home.

“The team is evolving, but I’m not a coach that will shut up shop and try and keep it really tight,” he explained.

“We want to go and score goals and we’ve brought some personnel to help us knowing that other teams are allowed to attack and allowed to try and score goals themselves, particularly at home.

“Let’s see how we go. I feel confident that the team can ask lots of questions of the opposition, can we stop the goals going in at the other end? Only time will tell.

“But I don’t sit here thinking that we’re going to be some super defensive team all season away from home.

“I’m mindful of the goals against column, we’ve been trying to adjust that for a few years now and see if the personnel we’ve brought in can help the situation.”

Rovers’ poor run of results on the road started with the 3-0 defeat at Derby County in March pre-lockdown.

Victory at Pride Park that day could have seen them climb into the top six, but came away having been undone by Derby’s youthful energy.

The Rams will be looking to get their season up and running after back-to-back defeats, and for that reason Mowbray feels there will be a greater intensity about Phillip Cocu’s side.

He added: “Derby County is a huge club with huge resources behind them. They have Wayne Rooney playing for them, you have to put it into some context.

“It’s a tough test, does it matter how they’ve started their first two games? Not really, what it does mean is they’ll be desperate to get a result in their next game.

“We will get the best Derby, the most concentrated Derby, I’m sure as opponents and it’s a game we should look forward to.

“We’ve had some up and down results against Derby, the home games against Derby we’ve beaten them 1-0, 2-0 and 1-0 and yet last year’s game we lost 3-0 with the emergence of some of their young players.

“They’ve got some very talented young players, allied to one of England’s greatest ever players so it’s a combination they will hope will put them into the top echelons of this league. For us it’s just the next challenge.”
