JAYSON Leutwiler has joined Fleetwood Town following his release from Blackburn Rovers.

The 31-year-old was signed by Joey Barton following the injury to new keeper Joel Coleman who suffered a hamstring injury during last weekend's Carabao Cup victory over Wigan Athletic.

Coleman, signed from Huddersfield Town and given the number one shirt, is expected to miss a large chunk of the season due to the severity of the injury.

Leutwiler is now expected to challenge Alex Cairns for the number one position with the Cod Army.

The Canadian keeper, who has represented his country three times, had been training with Accrington Stanley and played against Rovers in a behind-closed-doors friendly. However, Reds boss John Coleman decided not to follow up his interest in the keeper.

Leutwiler was one of five Rovers players who did not have their contracts renewed at the end of the 2019/20 season along with Danny Graham, Richie Smallwood, Dominic Samuel and Sam Hart.

Graham returned to Sunderland earlier this week while Smallwood has signed for fellow League One club Hull City

Samuel had been linked with a move to Championship new-boys Rotherham United while Hart is also looking for a new club.
