Rovers and Burnley have learned their second round, and possible third round, Carabao Cup opponents.

Rovers will travel to Newcastle United in round two, while Burnley will host Sheffield United having been first out of the hat.

Should Tony Mowbray’s side come through their tie at St James’ Park they will face a trip to Morecambe or Oldham in round three.

For Sean Dyche and Burnley, if they win their all-Premier League tie then a trip to Millwall or Cheltenham Town, managed by Michael Duff, awaits in the third round.

Rovers moved in to round two courtesy of a 3-2 win over Doncaster last month courtesy of goals from Lewis Holtby, Joe Rankin-Costello and an Adam Armstrong penalty.

They were knocked out in the second round last season by Sheffield United, having reached round three the previous season, with Bournemouth, then a Premier League side, knocking them out.

They last faced Newcastle United in the FA Cup third round in 2018/19, a tie which went to extra time in the Ewood Park replay.

As a Premier League side, Burnley enter the competition in round two, but were knocked out at this stage by League One opposition as Sunderland left Turf Moor 3-1 winners.

Second round ties will be played on the week commencing September 14, which will be the Clarets’ first game of the 2020/21 campaign, before their Premier League opener with Leicester City on September 19.

The third round ties will be played on September 22/23.

Accrington Stanley saw their Carabao Cup campaign end with defeat to Burton Albion in round one.
