BURNLEY continued their build-up for the new season with friendly wins over Hearts and Mansfield at the Barnfield Training Centre on Saturday.

Sean Dyche split his squad for the two matches played at the same time and they proved to be too strong for their Scottish visitors as they ran out 4-1 winners while they came from a goal down to beat League Two outfit Mansfield Town 4-1.

Against the Scottish Championship side, Jay Rodriguez opened the scoring from the penalty spot before youngsters Max Thompson and Lewis Richardson were both on target as Burnley lead 3-1 at the break.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson continued his return to full fitness after being dogged by injury last season with a fine goal after the break - his second in three warm-up games.

Burnley mixed experience with youth with Matt Lowton, James Tarkowski, Kevin Long Erik Pieters, Ashley Westwood all in the starting line-up.

The Clarets took an early lead when Rodriguez, who looked hungry up front, scored from the spot after the busy Richardson was brought down by Scotland goalkeeper Craig Gordon – back at the club where he started his career.

Rodriguez had chances to add to his spot kick but it was teenagers Thompson and Richardson who put the Clarets in control against a Hearts side who were relegated from the Scottish Premiership last season.

Thompson poked home from close range after Tarkowski - who missed the midweek 0-0 draw with Preston due to a minor injury - headed the ball down from a corner.

Richardson made it 3-0 on the half hour mark, reacting quickest to score after Thompson's effort was blocked.

Craig Wighton pulled one back for the visitors just before the break.

Burnley continued to dominate after the break but only had Gudmundsson's classy effort - a delightful chip over the stranded Gordon in the 47th minute.

Lowton and Pieters were both denied as Gordon made two fine saves.

Against Mansfield, Ollie Clarke gave the Stags the lead before Josh Brownhill levelled matters from a free kick before the break.

A Chris Wood’s brace and and another set-piece goal from Bobby Thomas put Burnley 4-1 up before Mansfield grabbed a lat consolation.

Once again, Sean Dyche mixed his team with Phil Bardsley, Charlie Taylor, Dwight McNeil, Matej Vidra, Brownhill and Wood the first team regulars on show.

Despite Burnley creating plenty of chances, Clarke gave Mansfield the lead with a sweetly struck effort from outside the area.

But Clarets levelled just before the break when Brownhill curled home a beautiful free kick from the edge of the box.

Two early goals in the second half, Wood tapping in from close range and Thomas rising highest to head home, but Burnley in charge.

Jimmy Dunne headed against the post before Wood raced clear to smash the ball home 10 minutes from time.

In the closing stages, Taylor diverted a Mansfield effort in to his own goal as Burnley sealed a 4-2 win.
