Tony Mowbray feels the final pre-season friendly at Leicester City has set his side up nicely for their Championship opener at Bournemouth.

Rovers ended their close season fixtures unbeaten after Derrick Williams equalised 10 minutes from time at the King Power Stadium, levelling the game up after Daniel Amartey headed the hosts infront. That came from a goalkeeping error by Andrew Fisher as he spilled a 67th minute corner in to the path of substitute Amartey to head home.

However, Williams came up with a header of his own, from a Jacob Davenport corner, to level for Rovers, the very least they deserved from a promising performance by Mowbray’s men.

They created the better of the opening, with Joe Rankin-Costello twice going close, as he did Harry Chapman in a lively cameo late on, with Williams also heading over before grabbing the equaliser.

Rovers, who beat Doncaster in their Carabao Cup first round tie seven days earlier, beat Blackpool and Fleetwood in their two previous scheduled friendlies, as well as overcoming Barrow and Accrington Stanley in behind closed doors fixtures.

After their game with Everton was called off, their Premier League test in pre-season came from the Foxes, who although without several of their internationals, still included the likes of Wilfried Ndidi, Demarai Gray, Harvey Barnes and Jamie Vardy in their starting line-up.

And encouraged by what he saw from his team, Mowbray said: “It was a really good exercise for us.

“We do a lot of work on the pressing side of the game and I think you can often hear my frustration when a part of that jigsaw falls out.

“The team understands what we're trying to do and I eventually want the team to demand that from each other when someone does drop off.

“Like I say, it was a really good exercise against a very good team on an amazing pitch and at an amazing stadium.

“It sets us up nicely. We’ll have a good week of training and then get ready for Bournemouth next weekend.”

Ryan Nyambe was fit enough to start for Rovers who were without Darragh Lenihan and Corry Evans due to their international commitments.

However, the one downside from pre-season has been a lack of minutes for Sam Gallagher who has yet to feature in the friendlies and remains a big doubt for the trip to the Vitaly Stadium.

That saw Rankin-Costello used as part of an attacking front three alongside Adam Armstrong and Ben Brereton who could all get the nod on the opening day.

Mowbray felt his side had started slowly, improving as the game went on, with a particular focus this pre-season coming on trying to press higher up the pitch.

That was aided by the speed in defence of Tyler Magloire who caught the eye in what was his first outing of pre-season, alongside goalscorer Williams whose future remains up in the air.

“I thought we started really slowly, particularly in the first quarter of an hour,” Mowbray told the club website.

“When you’re playing against a Premier League side, maybe you stand off against that extra little bit of class and sharpness that they’ve got, I think that’s only natural.

“But I felt we really grew into the game, particularly towards the end of the first half and for the majority of the second half as well.

“We didn’t deserve to lose the game and thankfully we got an equaliser which will just keep the confidence and the morale of the group ticking over.”
