BURNLEY opened their pre-season campaign with concurrent games at their Barnfield training base on Saturday.

One Clarets XI picked up a 3-0 win over Tranmere while a second lost out 2-1 to Shrewsbury Town.

Against Tranmere, young centre back Bobby Thomas was on target with more senior figures Matej Vydra and Johann Berg Gudmundsson getting the other goals.

Chris Wood scored in the Shrewsbury defeat as both sides featured a mixture of first-team and young players.

Skipper Ben Mee, midfielder Jack Cork and striker Ashley Barnes were not involved in either game as they continue their comebacks from injury.

The meeting with League Two Tranmere saw Vydra get the Clarets up and running in front of a watching Sean Dyche midway through the first half.

The Czech striker finished well after good work from Robbie Brady and Erik Pieters.

Thomas got on the scoresheet on the stroke of half time, capping an impressive display after taking advantage of central defensive partner Jimmy Dunne’s header from a Gudmundsson corner.

The third goal came just after the hour mark, Pieters’ second assist seeing him find Gudmundsson with a fine pass before the Icelandic winger finished past the advancing keeper.

Wood’s goal against Shrewsbury came from the penalty spot after strike partner Max Thompson had been fouled.

Under-23s coach Steve Stone was the man in charge of this game, the side featuring Dwight McNeil among others.

Matt Lowton also returned from injury at right back.

By the time Wood found the back of the net for the Clarets midway through the first half the hosts were already two goals down with Scott High and Shaun Whalley on target for the Shrews.

Next up is a trip to face Preston North End on Tuesday afternoon.

The behind-closed-doors game is a 2pm kick-off.

Dyche will be unable to call on the three players on international duty, England’s Nick Pope, Northern Ireland’s Bailey-Peacock-Farrell and Robbie Brady, who has linked up with the Republic of Ireland.

Being without two goalkeepers means that new arrival from Wolves Will Norris looks set to make his debut at Deepdale.

Alex Neil’s side played their first competitive game on Saturday, seeing off Mansfield 4-0 in the Carabao Cup.

The postponement of their opening day game against Manchester United means the Clarets’ season looks set to open with their second round Carabao Cup tie in the week commencing September 14.

Their first Premier League game comes at Leicester on September 19.
