Tony Mowbray says Rovers are looking to secure a defensive partner for Darragh Lenihan as the next part of their transfer puzzle.

Rovers will announce the signing of goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski from AA Gent tomororow for an undisclosed fee who will be their first choice for next season.

A back-up option will be recruited as well, but the next priority for Mowbray will be to add to his central defensive options after the loan departure of Tosin Adarabioyo.

Finding a defensive partner for Darragh Lenihan will be key, and while Rovers have a number of young options in that position, Mowbray feels experience could be vital

“At the moment the jigsaw isn’t finished because I think we need to man to play in the centre of our defence alongside Lenihan and we are trying to find the right ones,” he told the Lancashire Telegraph.

“It’s an area of the pitch we need to strengthen because while we have some fantastic young central defenders they are just that, and if we are going to get out of this league then you need to some men to a man’s job.

“It’s an area of the pitch we’re trying to get right and we’re trying to find those players and working hard to do that.

“Hopefully we’re close to a few things.”

Charlie Mulgrew and Derrick Williams have been regulars in the side throughout Mowbray’s tenure, but have been found opportunities scarce of late.

Mulgrew hasn’t featured in either of the pre-season friendlies thus far, and has interest from at least two League One clubs, with Rovers happy to facilitate a move.

Williams could also move on this summer, should the right opportunity become available, with Rovers having several young central defenders coming through.

Scott Wharton started the Blackpool friendly, as he did at Fleetwood, and could make his first competitive outing for Rovers in three years in the Carabao Cup against Doncaster on Saturday.

Hayden Carter started each of the final two Championship matches of 2019/20, and is another option in that area of the pitch.

Rovers will also look to add a left back in this window, with progress being made in that particular department.

And Mowbray added: “For two-and-a-half years we had some good players in that position and the team picked itself almost, with Lenihan, Mulgrew and Williams.

“I think it’s in a transition, we had Tosin on loan last year who is a young boy, but Lenihan is growing in to a real leader.

“We are pretty close, but unless you have loads and loads of money you’re trying to entice people with the project and how we’re going to play, what we’re going to do, are we going to threaten to get in to the Premier League this year and do they want to come on the journey?

“Rather than ‘here’s loads of money come and join us’.

“We’re working hard on that to try and make it better.”
