Jack Rodwell will be staying in the Premier League after agreeing a one-year contract extension with Sheffield United.

He had been out of contract since the end of the interrupted 2019/20 season.

His previous deal had been due to expire on June 30 but the 29-year-old agreed a short-term extension to take him to the end of the campaign when fixtures were rearranged following the coronavirus stoppage.

He made a first Premier League appearance in four years when coming off the bench in the Blades’ 1-1 draw at Burnley last month, one of two appearances he’s made for the club, the other coming in a January FA Cup tie against AFC Fylde.

Rodwell made 22 appearances, scoring once, in his single season at Ewood Park before making the move to Bramall Lane in January as a free agent.

During his time at Rovers he spent much of it as a central defender, the position the Blades also see him occupying.

Tony Mowbray revealed the club had held talks with Rodwell last year about a possible extension, with the former England international having held talks with a number of clubs over possible moves before United made their move at the beginning of 2020.

Phil Jagielka, 38, has also signed a new one-year contract with the Bramall Lane club.

Manager Chris Wilder told the club’s website: “Phil is a valuable and respected member of the squad and I’m delighted to keep him in the building for next season.

“The same applies with Jack, who offered us versatility and gave us options within the group during the second half of last term.”
