Rovers will concentrate their efforts, and finances, on strengthening in goal and in defence this summer.

Thomas Kaminski is expected to become the club’s first summer signing, should he pass his medical, with a fee agreed with AA Gent for the 27-year-old goalkeeper. The Belgian shot-stopper will become the club’s new No.1, with a back-up option also being lined up.

Rovers also plan to bring in two new central defenders, with Charlie Mulgrew expected to leave, with several League One clubs plotting moves, and potential interest in Derrick Williams.

Three deals are currently being explored, two of which would be permanent deals, and all three are domestic options.

Rovers are in need of strengthening in that area after the expiry of Tosin Adarabioyo’s loan, and new additions could allow the likes of Tyler Magloire and Joe Grayson to gain more experience out on loan, with Scott Wharton and Hayden Carter other prospects in that position.

Cedric Kipre, of cash-strapped Wigan Athletic, has been on the club’s radar, but while the budget will allow for cash signings, those are unlikely to stretch to seven-figure fees. That could well rule out a move for the 23-year-old, should the Latics hold firm on their demands for in excess of £1m.

The one loan deal that Rovers could consider is a move for long-term target Liam Lindsay, who is out of favour at Stoke City and didn’t feature in their weekend friendly with Burton Albion. However, reports in the national press say Huddersfield Town and Sheffield Wednesday are interested in the 24-year-old Scot.

A left back is also on Tony Mowbray’s wishlist, and with Stewart Downing also unlikely to sign the one-year contract he’s been offered to stay on for a second season, Rovers will also look to bring in a central midfielder, but that is unlikely to be Doncaster captain Ben Whiteman given the fee that would be required to prise him away from the Keepmoat Stadium.

Rovers brought in a left back last summer, in the form of Greg Cunningham on loan from Cardiff City, but that was cut short in January after he sustained a serious knee injury in October.

The Republic of Ireland international remains a target for Rovers, but finances would likely dictate that any possible move would need to be another loan switch, with other options being explored.

Despite the departures of Danny Graham and Dominic Samuel, Rovers aren't expected to bring in a new striker at first-team level this summer.

They have however, been linked with a move for Celtic youngster Connor McBride.

Rovers have been looking for a striker to add to their Under-23s ranks since Joe Nuttall graduated to the senior set-up in early 2019, and subsequently moved on to Blackpool.

That would allow Dan Butterworth and Jack Vale to push their claims for more first-team involvement next season.
