BURNLEY will not start the Premier League season as scheduled after being handed an ‘opening day’ home game with Manchester United.

The 2020/21 campaign will kick off on September 12, but the Clarets are facing a delay after Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side were permitted a 30-day break following their Europa League campaign.

That means Burnley will begin the season with their Carabao Cup second round tie, before a Premier League opener away to Leicester City on December 19.

Burnley’s first home league game will now be against Southampton on Saturday, September 26, with a trip to Newcastle United on October 3 before an international break.

It had been suggested that the Premier League could have paired United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Wolves on opening day, to give the sides in Europe extended rest, but this has not been the case.
