FORMER Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick is on the verge of completing a move to Newcastle United.

The Republic of Ireland international, who is a free agent after leaving the Clarets at the end of his four-year contract, had previously been linked with summer moves to AC Milan, Roma and Manchester United.

But the Magpies have swooped for the 28-year-old and it is understood he is undergoing the first stages of a medical.

Hendrick signed for Burnley in a £10.5million move from Derby County, having starred in Ireland's Euro 2016 campaign in France, where they famously beat Italy and reached the last 16.

He played 27 times for the Clarets last season but did not feature after the re-start following lockdown as he approached the end of his deal.

Newcastle are thought to be concentrating largely on English-based targets and Hendrick’s name appears on a list which is also thought to include the likes of Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, who spent last season on loan at Roma, Brentford striker Ollie Watkins and Bournemouth counterpart Callum Wilson among others.
