Tony Mowbray says he’s happy to lead Rovers into the next phase of their journey and will work within the parameters of whatever budget he’s given by the owners.

Mowbray says the club stand on the ‘cusp of which road we go down’ as he waits to learn how much money will be made available by Venky’s ahead of next season.

With Rovers’ play-off hopes mathematically ended by defeat at Millwall on Tuesday night, t Mowbray says that may be the clarity the owners were waiting on before indicating the finances made available to strengthen the squad for next season.

Rovers have six players whose contracts expire after next week’s final game at Luton Town, as well as two loan players - including Tosin Adarabioyo - who will return to their parent club. Mowbray says those gaps may have to be filled from within.

On the rebuilding job that lies ahead, Mowbray said: “Am I happy to do it? Yes, because I enjoy the work. If I wasn’t enjoying it then I’d be telling you.”

Mowbray was appointed Rovers manager in February 2017 and is under contract at the club until 2022 after signing a long-term deal in late 2018.

“I’m enjoying it, I enjoy working with footballers and try and make them better,” he added.

“I get frustrated after some games, the other night we lacked the quality around the final third.

“We can dominate the ball, but can we score a goal? It’s working on that.

“They’re good lads, I enjoy working with this group because they want to get better.

“Ultimately, to get to the top, to get to that level, we have a bit to go.

“Like every summer we’re at the cusp of which road we go down.

“If it’s the road of the young players then it might take a little bit longer, if there’s money there and you can go and get ready-made players to fill the positions that can improve us to become one of those top teams over 46 games next year then that will be a different avenue.

“Let’s wait and see.”
