Craig Conway’s bid for a new club will take him back north of the border as the former Rovers winger gets set to play for St Johnstone.

Conway will turn out for Callum Davidson’s side in a friendly this week as he aims to earn himself a contract for the 2020/21 season.

St Johnstone are said to be in the market for a wide player following the departures of Matty Kennedy, Danny Swanson and Drey Wright in 2020, with Conway available after his departure from League Two side Salford City where he made 23 appearances.

Now 35, Conway last played in Scotland nine years ago when he left Dundee United for Cardiff City, having started his career at Ayr United.

The Scot was a favourite at Ewood Park across his 200 appearances and five-and-a-half years, becoming a key fixture in the side and part of the squad that won promotion from League One in 2018/19.

Conway is reportedly set to turn out for the Scottish Premiership side against Hibernian today in a friendly ahead of the scheduled season start date of August.  Indeed, should he earn a deal McDiarmid Park then his first competitive game could come against Dundee United, who he helped win the Scottish Cup in 2010.

St Johnstone finished seventh in the top flight last season but will be under new management for next season, with former Davidson handed the reins in the summer following the departure of Tommy Wright who left after seven years in charge.

Davidson is no stranger to the club, having spent four years as assistant manager before leaving to work under Gary Rowett, first at Stoke and then Millwall, before getting his managerial chance.

Now 44, former left back Davidson was signed by Rovers for a seven-figure fee from St Johnstone in 1998 and he spent two-and-a-half years at the club, playing 78 times, before moving on to Leicester City.
