Rovers’ senior players have all agreed to see out the season at Ewood Park – though discussions over longer-term deals are yet to take place.

Stewart Downing, Danny Graham and Dominic Samuel, who all featured in the win over Bristol City, would previously have seen their deals expire on June 30 but have agreed to short-term extensions.

Back-up goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler, a substitute at the weekend, and Richie Smallwood, who didn’t make the matchday squad of 20, will also stay on, as will Sam Hart, recently back from his loan spell with Shrewsbury Town which will prevent him from featuring in the remaining eight games.

Boss Tony Mowbray revealed ahead of the Bristol City win that he had agreed extensions with his out of contract players, but with no budget drawn up for next season, that meant talks over extended stays had been put on hold.

Downing, who signed a one-year deal when joining from Middlesbrough last summer, and Graham, who marked four years at Ewood Park yesterday, have both stated their desire to stay on next season having featured in every matchday squad in 2019/20.

So too has Leutwiler, but the Canadian could seek opportunities elsewhere having spent the last three seasons as No.2, first to David Raya and then to Christian Walton.

Samuel has had an injury-hit time at Ewood Park, but has made three Championship starts this term, and is set to play a role in the remaining games this season.

Smallwood has featured in just one matchday squad in the Championship this season, and hasn’t played in the league since the 1-0 defeat to Stoke City in April 2019.

Hart meanwhile hasn’t played for Rovers since December 2017, having joined that summer from Liverpool, and has since had loan spells with Rochdale, Southend and Shrewsbury Town.

The contracts have been extended until the day after Rovers' final fixture of the current campaign - whenever that may be.

Then discussions with the six will take place over the possibility of future contract offers.
