Lewis Holtby will complete his comeback from injury when Rovers face Liverpool in a behind closed doors friendly today.

Rovers will travel to Merseyside to face Jurgen Klopp’s side later today as both look to improve their match sharpness ahead of the resumption of the Premier League and Championship campaigns on June 20.

Holtby hasn’t played since being forced off in the 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough on February 1 with a knee injury which was expected him to miss the rest of the season.

However, the midfielder, who flew back to Germany to continue his rehabilitation as lockdown hit, is in contention to feature in Rovers’ last nine games in a big boost to Tony Mowbray’s plans.

The 29-year-old has endured a stop-start beginning to his Rovers career since his free transfer switch in September, featuring 18 times in all.

But with Bradley Dack still recovering from the anterior cruciate ligament injury he sustained in December, Holtby is Rovers’ most natural like-for-like replacement and could hold the key to Mowbray’s hopes of continuing with his preferred 4-2-3-1 formation in the remaining matches.

Corry Evans is another fitness boost for Mowbray, the Northern Ireland international having not played since January after undergoing surgery after sustaining a fractured skull, broken nose and eye socket in the January draw with Preston North End.

Dack apart, Rovers are working with a fully-fit squad ahead of their Championship return against Bristol City on June 20, their first since the season was suspended back in March.

Liverpool meanwhile, haven’t played since their Champions League exit to Atletico Madrid on March 11, and return with a Merseyside derby against Everton next week as they look to wrap up the Premier League tittle.

The Reds played a practice match at Anfield last week, but will look to build on that when they meet Rovers today.

The sides last met in a pre-season friendly at Ewood Park in July 2018, where goals from Lazar Markovic and Daniel Sturridge saw Liverpool run out 2-0 winners.
