DAVID Wheater would happily play every one of Oldham Athletic’s nine remaining games back-to-back if it meant completing the season with some degree of normality.

The former Wanderers favourite is waiting to hear what the EFL have to say about extending the current pause period from April 30 into May.

But with the idea that the Premier League campaign could be contested over a truncated period – potentially even from a World Cup-style base to minimise travelling – Wheater would like to see every effort made get the League Two season played out in full.

“I heard Gary Neville discuss a good idea, basically to play games every day or every other day over 10 days or a couple of weeks, and I think that would suit me down to the ground,” said the Latics captain.

“Obviously we can only do it when it’s safe. Nobody wants to put themselves, families or their team-mates at risk.

“But I do like the idea we could keep training to a minimum and play the games out quicker. Colchester United away might be a bit of a pain, though, it’s miles away.”

Playing games behind closed doors is another option which has been widely discussed in the top-flight, although to do so at present there could be an unnecessary strain put on the emergency services.

“I wouldn’t have a big problem if that happened with us,” Wheater admitted. “As long as they found some way to let the fans see on the telly because you wouldn’t want people to miss out.

“If it’s the only way to get the season finished, then get it done. We can’t just abandon it.

“It would be like playing in a friendly. And at Bolton we played a couple of games on the training ground last summer because of the problems they were having opening the stadium. It wasn’t all that bad in the end”

Wheater is currently self-isolating with his family in Bolton and trying to keep his five-year-old daughter and three-year-old son entertained.

“It’s harder for her because she’s trying to get a bit of homework done and the little lad is running around,” he said. “It’s virtually impossible to get them sat down for more than an hour – but we’re making the best of it and having a bit of fun.

“I’ve definitely given up any plans to be a teacher though.”
