Derby County will make a late check on the fitness of former Rovers loanee Tom Lawrence ahead of Sunday’s game.

Lawrence limped off shortly before half-time in the FA Cup fifth-round defeat by Manchester United on Thursday night, and is a doubt for this weekend’s game.

The 26-year-old has nine goals this season, with four in his last six Championship outings, for Phillip Cocu’s side.

The Wales international has taken a knock to his calf which makes him a doubt to face Rovers who he played 23 times for in the first half of the 2015/16 campaign while on the books at Manchester United.

“Tom took a hard knock on his calf," said boss Cocu.

“We will assess him. Hopefully he will be available for Sunday.”

Andre Wisdom is another player who Derby will hope to have fit, the defender having missed the cup tie through illness.

An Odion Ighalo brace, and first half Luke Shaw strike, saw United make it an all Premier League last eight in the competition.

Cocu handed starts to five Academy graduates while a sixth, Morgan Whittaker, replaced Lawrence a minute before the break.

And he says the experience, even despite the result, will have served his players well.

He told his club’s website: “It was excellent experience for the team, especially for the youngsters. We made a decision all together to try to play football like we always do in the league and again against Manchester United.

“Maybe that was something they liked but you have to play to the qualities you have and try to play the positive. It wasn’t good enough to get a win.”

“First they have to deserve they opportunity by the way they train so for Max Bird, Jason Knight, Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe they have played a lot of games.

“It was an excellent game for Louie Sibley to come on with his qualities and get experience against a top team and he was the man of the match. That was a fantastic moment for him but also for the club as well.”
