Colne edged their way into the next round of the League Cup thanks to a fortuitous goal in the dying seconds of the match.

On 10 minutes, Liam Garbutt opened the scoring when he was first to react to Gavin Cooper's corner and he smashed the ball home from 10 yards through a crowded penalty area.

On the half-hour mark, Colne lost possession and Paul Prescott broke through the middle.

Mark Crossley came quickly out of his goals to clear the danger but the ball broke to Sam Fairhust who lobbed the ball into an empty net for the equaliser.

In the last 10 minutes, as Colne looked for a winner, Garbutt was replaced by Stevie Hall and Scott Gizon was thrown into the attack.

Gizon's presence upset the Ashton defence and it was not long before he released Ted Cockett but he was taken out just as he was about to shoot on the edge of the area.

But justice was done because from the resulting free kick, the ball broke to Hall and he rifled a shot across the goal which struck McNair on the back and it rebounded into the corner of the net for the winner.
