Matej Vydra admitted he had been waiting a long time for his starring moment in Burnley’s win at Southampton.

The Czech striker came off the bench to fire home his first Premier League goal in 17 months as the Clarets made it three wins from four games with a 2-1 victory.

It has been a frustrating time for the 27-year-old, heavily linked with a move away from Turf Moor in recent weeks.

But an injury to Chris Wood 22 minutes in opened the door for the former Derby man and he took his chance, hammering a shot beyond Alex McCarthy on the hour mark as Sean Dyche’s side continued their fine recent run.

“I’ve been waiting so long for this chance,” Vydra told BT Sport.

“I just try to do my best and help get the three points and I’ve scored so I’m happy for me and for all my mates.

“It was a brilliant goal but the most important thing is the three points.

“It’s three wins and a draw in four games and we’re going up the table. I think everyone is happy right now.”
