“They didn’t cut the grass. they didn’t water the grass!”

Good grief. I don’t know what it is about Burnley Football Club, but it seems to really offend teams when they don’t beat us. Mikel Arteta’s bizarre comments after the Clarets’ impressive draw against Arsenal were, thankfully, ridiculed in both the press and on social media but it is wearing a bit thin, nonetheless in a similar vein to the whole anti-football narrative.

Can you even imagine the reaction if Jay Rodriguez’s effort late on had crept a mere inch further forward?

We are so due a win against that lot, and we so nearly got it too. I don’t want to dwell too much on the game, but I would like to single out a couple of individual performances.

Charlie Taylor looks like he has been playing in the Premier League his entire life and there have been genuine calls for him to get the England nod.

I am completely in love with those little steps he does to bring the ball inside and run past defenders. Maybe there’s a closet winger inside of him.

Another England ‘prospect’, James Tarkowski, also had a phenomenal game and must just be so confused as to why Tyrone Mings is in the England squad and he isn’t.

And, finally, I say bravo to the flourishing partnership that is forming between Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez. Just maybe whack it a bit harder next time, eh Jay lad?

So it now falls on the team to enjoy the inaugural mid-winter break and I am not sure how I feel about it.

On one hand, we so desperately need it to give these boys a break and get some injured bodies fit again. But on the other hand, I don’t really want to lose the momentum we’ve gained over the last three weeks. Heading into January’s fixtures I worried immensely at where our points would come from and predicted that we could well be in the bottom three by the end of January.

If you deduct the seven points we got from Leicester, Man United and Arsenal, we would have been too.

I maintain convinced that 40 points will be needed to survive this year, but we go into this break with 31 on the board and just three wins ought to do it. And it is only February.

So, boys, enjoy the week off. Get some sunshine. And don’t forget to water the lawn….
