Rovers will make assessments today before deciding if any of their senior players will be fit enough for the New Year’s Day trip to Nottingham Forest.

Derrick Williams and Lewis Holtby added their names to the absentees list, with Ryan Nyambe and Corry Evans having limped out of the games with Birmingham and Wigan respectively.

It comes in a week where Rovers have been rocked by news that Bradley Dack will miss much of 2020 with an anterior cruciate knee ligament injury, having already been without on-loan full back Greg Cunningham.

The one positive for Rovers was having on-loan Manchester City defender Tosin Adarabioyo available again having missed the two previous two home games, a timely return given the fact fellow central defender Williams broke down in training ahead of the game.

“Otherwise I wouldn’t have known who was playing centre half for us to be honest,” Mowbray said of Adarabioyo’s return.

“Ryan Nyambe was another miss for us I would have to say, Corry Evans is a frustration and we know about Bradley (Dack).

“They are generally fatigue injuries. Williams lasted two minutes in training on Saturday. He walked off from training and I’m not sure if he will be available (for Forest).

“Evans we’ll try him on the grass on Monday and see if he can make it. Nyambe, I don’t think he will make it.

“Dack is out, Holtby is again a fatigue injury. He’s come from another country and is finding it really tough.  That’s just a muscle injury and we’ll see how long he’s out for.”

Rovers ended 2019 with a first defeat in nine matches, but were left frustrated once again having taken the lead, only to not see the game through.

It means they took just two points from their three games in six days against teams in the lower reaches of the Championship table, leaving them 12th at the end of 2019.

The goals conceded were of particular frustration to the manager, but he feels Rovers’ struggles of late have been at the other end of the pitch.

“We didn’t deal with the wide free kick that as we should have done with the players we had on the pitch against a team who were physically strong team,” he added.

“We’re left frustrated and didn’t produce enough quality and left frustrated with the result.

“I think the first two games this week we struggled to score goals against teams who set up to make life difficult for us.

“Wigan know a lot about us, we have been on a similar journey to us over the last couple of years, and it was always going to be a tough game.

“The Birmingham manager (Pep Clotet) sat in my office and said that they came to just not get beaten and they made it very difficult for us to get to get through them and create chances.

“For the first 20 minutes (at Huddersfield) we showed that we could move them around and after that Huddersfield made it a scrappy game and went more direct.

“That’s alright, we’ve done it ourselves in the past when we haven’t had results and made the game scrappy against certain teams and managed to get results.

“Credit to them, we’re just left a bit frustrated.”
