PHIL Bardsley knows the onus is now on Burnley to back up their win over Newcastle at Bournemouth.

The Clarets head south to face the Cherries on Saturday with Eddie Howe's side fresh from ending their run of five straight defeats at Chelsea.

Dan Gosling's late goal handed them a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on the same day that Burnley got back to winning ways themselves by the same scoreline against the Magpies at Turf Moor.

Now the challenge for both is to ensure it's not a one-off at the start of a busy festive period that will help shape their seasons.

“It’s up to us to build on it," Bardsley told the club.

"We have got some good fixtures coming up over the Christmas period and we believe there are plenty of points to be picked up.

“Bournemouth had a good result, so they will be buzzing. But it’s up to us.

“We believe we can compete against anybody in this league and we will go there and have a right good go.

“We’d had a couple of tough weeks and it was about getting back together and getting that edge to our game and I think we did that.

“It was a big performance, especially coming off the back of three difficult games."

The former Stoke man has played four of the last five games at right back having moved ahead of Matt Lowton in the pecking order.
