Rovers defender Joe Grayson has undergone surgery on a hamstring injury that looks set to rule him out for the season.

The club’s Under-23s captain sustained the injury in training during the international break and became the latest defender to add his name to the injury list.

Grayson joined Darragh Lenihan and Greg Cunningham (both knee) on the sidelines, while Tyler Magloire is back at Rovers undergoing his rehabilitation following surgery on an injury picked up during his loan spell with Rochdale.

Grayson made his second Rovers start in the Carabao Cup win over Oldham in August, but hadn’t featured in a Championship matchday squad before suffering the injury.

Posting on social media, the 20-year-old wrote: “Surgery successful, now the long road to recovery. Season over but got the best people around me to make sure I come back a better player.”

Grayson finished last season with Grimsby Town, playing eight times for the League Two side, and would likely have come under consideration for another loan spell in January before his injury.

Scott Wharton (Northampton) and Matty Platt (Barrow) are already out on loan, as is Charlie Mulgrew who is also nursing a hamstring problem picked up during his spell with Wigan.

As well as defensive injuries at first-team level, a number of Rovers’ younger players are also currently injured, with Under-23s boss Billy Barr unable to call on Charley Doyle, Louis Annesley and Sam Hart.

The club have since taken Manchester City youngster Timi Sobowale on trial, making his first appearance in the Lancashire Senior Cup quarter final win over Everton.

The 17-year-old he could feature again when the Under-23s travel to Chelsea on Saturday.
