Striker Jay Rodriguez believes the Clarets can take plenty of positives from the 4-2 defeat to Chelsea at Turf Moor on Saturday.

The Burnley-born front man scored his third goal in three starts with a screamer in the dying minutes before Dwight McNeil added a second to make the scoreline more respectable.

But, despite defensive errors gifting Christian Pulisic the first two of his three goals, Rodriguez says the spirit shown by Sean Dyche’s men will stand them in good stead going forward.

He said: “That’s what you’ve got from this group of players and this team is a lot of fight, determination and hard work and it showed then that no matter what happens we still go until the end.

“That’s something to be proud of and we’ll take it into the next game.”

Chelsea went in 2-0 up at the break but the Clarets had the pick of the chances in the opening 45 minutes with Ashley Barnes squandering the best of the lot, somehow heading wide from just a couple of yards out.

Rodriguez felt that had his strike partner been able to take that gilt-edged chance then the game may have panned out differently.

He said: “If we take the chances then it becomes a totally different game. Obviously, Chelsea did well to take their chances and it kills the games the second goal before half-time and it’s disappointing but we still felt we were in the game at that point.

“To concede another two after that was really disappointing but like I say we’ll take positives from the game.

“We worked hard and you could see the endeavour to try and affect the game and hurt Chelsea right up until the last minute so that’s something to be proud of.”
