BEN Mee says football needs to be able to “trust” VAR for it to have a positive impact on the game.

It is a week since Burnley felt robbed of a point at Leicester after the video assistant referee chalked off Chris Wood’s equaliser for an adjudged foul.

Time has not been a healer on this occasion for Mee, the decision still smarts, and the Clarets captain says it has further highlighted flaws in the system. “From the first moment I saw it, it didn’t get much better from my personal opinion,” he said.

“We have to take the decision as it is and hopefully over the course of the season we’ll get a couple of decisions ourselves.

“The on-field decision was what it was, I personally didn’t see any ‘clear or obvious’ error, but it’s one of them.”

The defender added: “You want that trust and you want it to work for the good of the game. That’s ultimately what it’s there for and you don’t want it intruding too much, you want the officials to be able to referee the game themselves.”

Burnley manager Sean Dyche maintains that VAR will be beneficial to football once the teething problems are solved.

“We are just looking for that balance I think,” he said.

“I am still a believer in VAR and I think it will get a bit more streamlined. The only question mark left is the turnover of penalties. There have been one or two where I certainly thought they were penalties and I think that is the last thing, that strength of VAR in turning things over.

“I think we all agree that there have probably been a few which should have been turned over this season.”
