Christian Walton believes the team spirit within the Rovers camp is enough to see them through the injury disappointments to Greg Cunningham and Darragh Lenihan.

Two of Tony Mowbray’s first choice back four picked up knee injuries in the defeat at QPR, with on-loan Cunningham set to miss the remainder of the season, with Lenihan out for up to eight weeks.

That will mean changes to the side when Rovers return to Championship action against Huddersfield Town this weekend, but goalkeeper Walton says competition is fierce within the group.

Much was spoken of Rovers’ team spirit during their League One promotion campaign, and although just a few months in to his time at the club, the 23-year-old says he’s joined a close-knit group.

“I’ve said that competition for places is massive. It’s a great club join for me personally because I think we’ll have a successful season,” the Brighton loanee said.

“Competition is good, it’s healthy, keeps you on your toes and I think we’ve seen that when lads do get in the team it’s been good.

“I can only comment on what I’ve seen so far but there is a great team spirit, the staff, everyone at the club is wanting to push in one direction which is good.

“The team spirit is massive. I came from Brighton where they got promoted and being in and around it, I think the main reason was the team spirit around the place.

“It’s about everyone chipping in and helping your team-mates out because it does get tough in this league and it’s only around the corner when games do get tough. We need to remain positive and keep things going.”

Rovers return to Championship action against Huddersfield after a two week break, having dropped to 14th in the table after a run of one point from their last three games.

Back-to-back wins over Millwall and Reading were followed by defeats to Luton and QPR, sandwiched by a draw with Nottingham Forest.

Walton added: “It’s about being ready for every challenge and what awaits.

“There are a lot of good teams in this league, but we have to stay on our game, be focussed.

“You have to take each game as it comes, we’ll be prepared, knowing what they will bring, it’s just about putting in the performances on the day and picking up those wins.”
