“THEY got exactly what they came for,” Aston Villa manager Dean Smith cried.

“They are literally the worst team in the league and stealing a living,” the Villa fans cried.

The fact the the Clarets scored two goals away from home, twice came from behind, hit the crossbar and watched Chris Wood miss a 'sitter' is surely cast iron evidence of a side not just interested in a draw.

The real question is which side displayed the greater amount of savviness? Because, more than anything, that is what I took from the game at the weekend.

We have been in this league for long enough now to know its DNA.

What tricks you need to deploy, how to close games out, how to get points away from home and when it is safe to go all-out attack.

Look, I am not saying that plan was executed perfectly - that first half performance raised a few questions - but Villa displayed the same hints of naivety of a newly promoted side that we did back in 2009 and 2014. And we know how they ended.

Both Villa and Sheffield Utd are approaching this league with a steely-eyed instance of playing the exciting and expansive football that got them promoted.

Admirable? Definitely. Foolish? Perhaps.

It may work, but not in isolation, and John McGinn was spot on when he claimed that whilst it may not be pretty, Villa also have to learn the tricks that other teams deploy if they are going to hold onto those leads and pick up points.

That's him calling for his side to be more savvy.

Everton today is likely to be another similar game.

There’s a good chance we will win and the Toffees’ online forums will be littered with the shame of being beaten by Burnley. BURNLEY FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE!

This game reminds me of the corresponding fixture a couple of years ago when, around the same stage of the season, the Clarets beat a Ronald Koeman side to all but confirm that he would be out of a job sooner rather than later.

They look out of sorts, and I remain unconvinced by current boss Marco Silva.

That said, they should be encouraged by a much improved performance against Manchester City and we shouldn't underestimate them.

That said, if things get a little sticky we can always deploy our new secret weapon - the 4-3-3 formation. Who knew Sean Dyche could be so maverick?
