Tony Mowbray faces a selection dilemma with a near fully-fit squad to choose from ahead of the weekend visit of Luton Town.

Tosin Adarabioyo missed the win at Reading through an injury sustained 24 hours prior to the game at the Madejski Stadium, but trained with the squad on Thursday.

He has played just twice since signing on loan from Manchester City, the most recent of those being the last home game against Millwall on September 14 where he was replaced midway through the second half.

Joe Rothwell was due to start at Reading, only to be withdrawn on the day of the game through illness, which had blighted several players in the lead-up to the game.

Mowbray says the effects of that have now gone, but Rothwell is still a doubt for the weekend.

Dominic Samuel has pushed his claims for a first-team spot with six goals in four Under-23s outings, including a hat-trick in a win over Tottenham on Monday, with the addition of Lewis Holtby last week boosting numbers yet still.

And while Mowbray has already decided on his team to face the Hatter, he admits he faces some tough calls on who will make the matchday 18.

“There were a few coughing and spluttering on the training ground so there might be one or two who miss out their weekend, not because it (the bug) is still raging, but because of the aftermath of it,” he explained.

“We’ll be okay, I’m not sitting here with any concerns, my concerns are more about who is being left out of the 18 which is never easy for a manager to make those tough calls.

“They will know the team two days before, generally it’s a two day build-up for matches. They will know the team because we have to do the work and the tactics and looking at how the opposition play and where they need to be.

“They won’t know the subs of course, they will know an hour and a half before kick-off because that’s when we have a team meeting and I reveal the substitutes.

“Generally we have a squad of 20, 21 or 22, so there will be two, three or four not getting stripped and sitting in the stands watching.”

Ben Brereton (knee) and Dan Butterworth (back) are the two injury concerns, though Butterworth was put through his paces on the training pitches on Thursday, with Brereton still around three weeks away from returning.

The boss added: “Samuel is coming back, he scored three goals for the Under-23s on Monday against Tottenham, Brereton will be another two or three weeks and it becomes more difficult as you move on.

“Generally the injuries are always around, you tend to always have two or three injuries and they tend to revolve, when one comes back another picks up something in training and that’s why you need squads.

“At this moment, apart from Brereton and Danny Butterworth, we’re okay.

“Days like today, we wanted to work with 20 players because I wanted to do some team structure, you’re sending some players off to work with the Under-23s because you are doing a 10v10 with 20 players.

“The others would be stood on the sidelines otherwise kicking balls in to empty nets so we send them to work with the Under-23s to do some proper training.

“It’s not easy, but it’s part of the job to get the team ready for the weekend.”

Adarabioyo has had a frustrating start to life at the club, and like Rothwell, was set to start against Reading.

On their fitness, Mowbray said: “Tosin trained today. There’s a few we’ll wait and see on.

“Joe Rothwell was coughing like an old man and yet we’ll make a decision tomorrow on where we’re going to go.

“When you’re preparing teams you have to look at how the last 20 minutes might look if you need a goal, or see a game out.”
