ALI Koiki scored twice as Burnley’s Under-23s picked up their first Professional Development League win of the season yesterday.

Steve Stone’s youngsters were 3-2 winners at Charlton Athletic in a game played at Dartford’s Princes Park.

Koiki, who featured for Sean Dyche’s first-team during pre-season, gave the Clarets the lead before the Addicks struck twice to lead at the break.

The 20-year-old then got his second to level things up before Mitch George scored the winner midway through the second half.

“I’m really pleased because for the effort the boys have put in so far this season, they should have won more this season,” Stone told the club website.

“We’ve talked about it a lot, where we have drawn and conceded sloppy goals, so today not only was their performance decent, we scored some good goals and their game management was good.

“They had to hold on for the last 15 minutes there and these lads are always learning, and it’s not always learning with the ball, it’s learning how to play without the ball as well.”

Stone hopes that this victory will give his side a real boost going forwards, a game against Ipswich Town at Curzon Ashton’s Tameside Stadium next up on Monday, September 16.

“All in all it was a really good performance,” the former England winger said.

“They deserved it because they have put the hard yards in week in, week out, but they really deserved that today and I’m pleased for them all.

“Winning does breed more confidence.

“What they have to realise now is though that winning game means nothing for the next game.

“You start at 0-0 next week and you have to start all over again, but I would hope it boosts their confidence even more.”

It was a youthful Burnley side on show with goalscorer George, as well as Joe McGlynn and Ne-Jai Tucker, stepping up from the Under-18s.
