Tony Mowbray says a win over Middlesbrough at the weekend will have no bearing on his selection at Hull City tonight.

Rovers made four changes for the win over Boro and Mowbray is known for rarely selecting an unchanged team, doing so on just five occasions last season.

The boss waited until matchday 14 last season to go with the same XI, and until after the new year in the League One promotion campaign.

And despite earning their first Championship points of the season against Boro, Mowbray says finding the right combination to beat Hull City at the KCOM Stadium tonight is his priority.

“I think the philosophy of the team might change a little bit away from home,” said Mowbray of the difference about playing away from Ewood.

“You might not want to be as aggressive and on the front foot, but if that’s the way you see it then you should.

“I think the team home or away is picked because of the strengths of the players we’ve got against the weaknesses of the opposition.

“In my eyes that’s the way it should be done and the players have to buy in to it and understand that and know that even if they do pretty well in one game they may not be playing the next.

“Each game is a totally different proposition and you have to try and win the next game, so regardless of what happened in the last match, I will pick the team I think.

“The only change on that philosophy would be if I felt the personality of the players needed affecting. You pick footballers based on their assets, but what the supporters don’t always see is the personalities of those players.

“Your team has to have a balance of the emotional side as well, how many leaders have you got out on the pitch.”

Sam Gallagher was preferred as the central striker for the opening two league games but was moved out to the flank for the win over Middlesbrough.

Mowbray could move him back inside for the trip to East Yorkshire, should he not feel Danny Graham is the right option against Grant McCann’s side.

The back five and central midfield two is likely to remain unchanged, but Adam Armstrong and Joe Rothwell could also come in to the boss’ thinking should he want to add more pace to his side.

Whatever calls he does make, Mowbray says it will be for the good of the team.

“I don’t see it as difficult,” he said.

“As long as those players are understanding of the issues you’ve got and understand that the team is more important than any individual then that’s fine.

“I will pick the next team off where we think we can exploit the opposition’s weaknesses.

“To move to the next level and to dominate matches you have to be good with the ball, see different passes, short and long and as we go on we need to be able to develop that.

“We don’t want to be too one-dimensional, and the balance is when to play and when to go direct, depending on which players we select.

“We have to try and pick the right team against the opposition and do the basics well.”
