ALAN Mahon is hoping a change of manager for the Republic of Ireland can lead to a change in international fortunes for his Clarets team-mate Chris McCann.

The Dubliner expressed his shock and disappointment that young buck McCann wasn't picked for the full Ireland squad under previous boss Steve Staunton, who favoured youth over experience during his short spell in charge.

The 20-year-old has missed only three Burnley games this season, with a hamstring injury, netting in a 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday. And he was a mainstay in the Clarets midfield last year, with five goals.

Mahon, whose last appearance for his country came some six years ago, said: "The country is in a bit of a transition and a there are a lot of younger players than me coming through.

"I am surprised that Chris McCann is overlooked though. I know what he can do as a player and to not even get a mention is beyond comprehension.

"I think he's only ever had one U21 call-up and I don't know why that is. For me he should be in that squad at least."

The Football Association of Ireland terminated Staunton's contract by mutual consent following an emergency meeting.

Staunton, who took over from Brian Kerr in January 2006, had been under pressure because of poor performances in the Euro 2008 qualifying campaign.

The nation's bid to reach the finals ended when his team could only manage a 1-1 draw with Cyprus on 17 October.Under-21 boss Don Givens will take temporary charge.

And Mahon believed now was the perfect time to promote McCann to the senior squad.

He said: "He is playing first team football at a very good level and has been for the past few seasons and I can't believe there are better all-round, goalscoring midfielders to choose from.

"But as I say it's a transitional period and Steve Staunton was blooding younger players.

"It's out with the old and in with the new and I will be hoping to see Chris get a call up sooner, rather than later."
