BLACKBURN Rovers were involved in a turbulent transfer deadline day as Greg Cunningham arrived from Cardiff City and captain Charlie Mulgrew is understood to be on his way to Wigan Athletic.

Rovers tried hard to sign Harrison Reed from Southampton, but Fulham came in with a deal that blew Rovers' away.

Cunningham, who arrives on a season-long loan, will do battle with Amari'i Bell for the left-back spot.

Mulgrew joined Rovers from Celtic back in 2016 and has since made 99 appearances for the club while scoring 27 goals.

The centre half scored the only goal in the game at Doncaster Rovers in April 2018 which secured promotion back to the Championship.

That was his 14th goal of that promotion winning season, setting a new club record for a the amount of goals scored by a defender.

New signing Cunningham is Rovers' sixth addition in the summer transfer window and the 28-year-old comes with bags of experience to add to the ranks at Ewood Park.

He started his career at Manchester City before being loaned to Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

A permanent move to Bristol City then followed another move to Preston North End - where the Irishman made 103 appearances.

Last summer, Cardiff City were believed to have paid around £4 million for the Republic of Ireland international.

"It was a quick drive up the motorway, but I'm delighted to get everything signed and done, and I'm happy to be here," said Cunningham, Rovers' new left-back.

"It's been a frustrating time at Cardiff and I just want to play football, so when the club came in I was buzzing to get it done.

"You just have to look at the history and the facilities here.

"I also spoke to Del (Derrick Williams) and I know Darragh Lenihan as well. There's a great squad here and I'm looking forward to working under the manager.

"It's a new challenge for me and I'm here to give my all for Blackburn Rovers."
