BURNLEY and Accrington Stanley met in a behind-closed-doors friendly yesterday.

The match was part of two played simultaneously by the Clarets with Tranmere Rovers also visiting the Barnfield Training Centre for a pre-season run-out.

Jay Rodriguez scored his first goals since his return to Turf Moor, scoring twice against Stanley.

Fellow new boy Erik Pieters was also on target in the 8-0 win with Chris Wood scoring a hat-trick.

The game against Tranmere saw the Clarets go down 3-2 in a game where Matej Vydra scored both goals for Sean Dyche’s side.

The boss saw most of his squad get a full 90 minutes as players switched between opposition at the break.

Against Stanley, Rodriguez scored with a header from an Ashley Westwood corner before firing a shot into the top corner as Burnley scored six unanswered goals in the first half.

For Wood it is now four in two pre-season outings after scoring from the penalty spot against Fulham during the training camp in Portugal.

Jimmy Dunne also scored against his former loan club before Pieters scored with a 20-yard strike.

The Tranmere game saw Vydra score a first-half double as he looks to force his way into contention after a frustrating first season at Turf Moor.

Rovers, managed by former Claret Micky Mellon, hit back in the second half for victory however as they build up to their League One season after winning the League Two play-off final at Wembley in May.

With four goalkeepers playing 45 minutes Tom Heaton got his first action of pre-season in the second half against Tranmere as speculation continues about his long-term future at Turf Moor.

The England shot-stopper is a target for Aston Villa among others with 12 months remaining on his contract.

There was also an hour of action for David Jones as he continues to stay sharp while training with his former club.

The 34-year-old midfielder left Sheffield Wednesday in the summer and is on the lookout for a new club.

The Clarets’ first public friendlies take place this Saturday with Dyche splitting his squad for games against League Two sides Crewe and Port Vale.

The new Premier League season kicks off at home to Southampton on August 10.
