Rovers captain Charlie Mulgrew has been named in Steve Clarke’s first squad as Scotland manager.

Mulgrew missed the March qualifiers through injury after suffering a hamstring strain in Rovers’ defeat to Preston.

He was forced off injured again in the defeat to Stoke on April 6 which proved to be his final appearance of the season after losing his place to Derrick Williams in the final weeks of the season.

But Mulgrew has been a regular for his country in the last two seasons and is in the squad for matches against Cyrpus (June 8) and Belgium (June 11).

Earlier this month, Clarke, previously in charge of Kilmarnock, was named as Alex McLeish’s successor, who was sacked following a disappointing start to their Euro 2020 qualifying campaign.

They were beaten 3-0 in Kazakhstan before labouring to a 2-0 win in San Marino.

Clarke will be hopeful of getting off to a positive start against Cyprus at Hamden before a tough test in Belgium three days later.

Mulgrew is one of eight defenders in the squad and will be looking to win cap number 40 in these latest international matches.

Rovers afforded Mulgrew extra time off last summer because of his international commitments and will weigh up whether to do the same this year.

The players return for pre-season training in the final week of June as they head to Austria for a week-long training camp before their first of six friendlies at Barrow on July 6.
