Rovers have a week long training camp in Austria before six pre-season friendlies. But which players will be most keen to impress Tony Mowbray and his coaching staff?

SCOTT WHARTON

It is easy to forget it is approaching three years since Wharton made his Rovers debut as an 18-year-old. That remains his only league start, with four more across three competitions, the last of those being in December 2017.

He finished 2016/17 with Cambridge, playing nine times, and ended 2017/18 with Lincoln. This season saw him claim a unique double-promotion, starting the season with League Two champions Lincoln and finishing it with Bury who were automatically promoted. But the Salesbury-born defender had two mixed spells, particularly with Lincoln starting just five league games.

Rovers will be keen to further strengthen their defensive ranks, and Wharton is one of a clutch of young central defenders at the club alongside Tyler Magloire, Joe Grayson and Matty Platt.

Wharton still has two years left to run on his contract but will be keen to show Tony Mowbray he has a role to play if not in the short-term, at least in the longer-term.

JACOB DAVENPORT

Has time on his side, having signed a four year deal last summer and still only 20. But Davenport will have been happy to end an injury hit season on a high as he made his debut on the final day.

The former Manchester City youngster had an extended spell with the Under-23s to prove he was ready for first team exposure but will be keen to show he’s progressed beyond that now.

Davenport demonstrated his talent in the five friendlies he featured in last summer, not least the win at Hibs.

Mowbray’s plan for a more technical midfield next season could work in his favour, but he won’t want to be pushed aside by any new signings.

His arrival last summer was after the training camp in Austria, but being part of the travelling party this time around should help him become more robust to any threat of injury.

DOMINIC SAMUEL

Unfortunately we have seen more of Samuel in the gym than on the pitch in the last 12 months.

The striker certainly put in the hard yards last summer to boost his physicality, enlisting the help of a personal trainer. It was something he had planned to continue during the season, but sadly it was a campaign that ended in just his third appearance.

Samuel was brought on at half-time against Reading on August 22 but lasted just 27 minutes himself before coming off with a knee ligament injury.

That ended his season, but the 25-year-old is expected to be involved in pre-season, having impressed against Everton in last summer’s friendlies.

His absence last season left Rovers a striker short, something Mowbray will look to plug in the transfer window this summer. But Samuel, who scored eight goals in Rovers’ promotion campaign of 2017/18, will be keen to prove his worth as a viable option.
