Jack Rodwell is out of contract this summer but Tony Mowbray says he is relaxed over his future.

The Rovers utility man has appeared in three consecutive Championship matches, including a start against Bolton on Monday.

Rodwell has 21 appearances under his belt this season, but no decision over his future has been taken over whether he will be at the club next season.

Mowbray plans to speak with all of his squad after the season ends next week, but says there is no more urgency with Rodwell despite coming into the final weeks of his contract.

Rodwell has largely been used in central defence during his time at Ewood Park, but has also played in central midfield, with Rovers keen to strengthen in both positions this summer.

Mowbray told the Lancashire Telegraph: “I’m pretty relaxed about Jack’s situation and I think he and his agents are.

“We’ve got two games to go and then we’ll sit down, see what we want to do and he wants to do. We’ll see if he fits around where we might be signing players.

“He’ll be told what the competition will be like.

“I see him as a very versatile player who can play at the back and in midfield.

“He’s very technical, I’m interesting to see what his thoughts are at the end of the season and what he wants to do.

“There’s no more point me discussing it further until I’ve spoken to him.”

The 28-year-old had a difficult spell with Sunderland prior to joining to Rovers, having come through the ranks at Everton before a big-money move to Manchester City.

He has two England caps to his name and has displayed that quality at times during his 21 Rovers outings.

Monday’s win against Bolton was however just his 150th career start, having been hampered by injuries, but his fitness has held up well at Rovers, starting 15 games and making a further six substitute appearances.

Mowbray plans to sit down with all of his squad after the final game of the season against Swansea City next weekend.

But the boss says the case of Rodwell, who has settled in well to life at the club, is no more pressing despite his contract situation.

Mowbray added: “We’ll get these two games out of the way first and then talk to everyone.

“There’s no more urgency with Rodwell than anyone else because if he’s already been talking to other clubs behind the scenes then that’s fine, let them do that.

“I can’t affect that. But if they want to talk about a new deal here and it’s something we feel is right within the parameters of what we can do then we’ll discuss that.”
