STRIKE duo Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes were both on the scoresheet as Burnley made it back-to-back wins for the second time this season, and climbed out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The Clarets had to come back from behind, and both teams were reduced to 10 men in an end-to end Roses battle, with Christopher Schindler picking up his second yellow before the break and Burnley substitute Robbie Brady red carded at the end.

The Clarets had been quicker and slicker against West Ham, but found it more of a struggle against more physical opposition in Huddersfield. Nevertheless they found the necessary grit to put some distance between themselves and the bottom club.

Despite their struggle the Terriers had more of the ball and chances in the opening 15 minutes, but nothing meaningful.

Burnley eventually began to settle into the game and forced a double save from Jonas Lossl following a free kick conceded by Schindler, for which he picked up his first booking on the half-hour.

Ashley Westwood whipped in the free kick and an unmarked Ben Mee brought the first stop from the Danish goalkeeper, before Barnes was denied from a tight angle.

Huddersfield came back at Burnley and it needed a goalline clearance courtesy of the head of Phil Bardsley to stop Elias Kachunga’s bullet header from Alex Pritchard’s corner.

Burnley then made danger for themselves as Westwood was robbed cheaply of possession just inside his own half and Huddersfield broke quickly down the left.

Isaac Mbenza crossed for Steve Mounie at the far post, and the Benin international sent a downwards header past Heaton and into the net.

But there was a determination about Burnley to use the West Ham win as a turning point this season and not another false start, and they hit back quickly.

Having been influential against the Hammers, youngster Dwight McNeil was effective again here, taking on the Huddersfield defence and crossing for Wood to fire home his second in as many games five minutes before the break.

The Clarets were given another lift a minute later when Schindler picked up his second yellow for bringing McNeil down just outside the box.

But Burnley had to be patient before making the breakthrough they needed to break out of the bottom three.

Wood got his head to Westwood’s cross from the left, but failed to at least hit the target with his far post header.

The striker then traded passes with Johann Berg Gudmundsson on a quick counter, but the Iceland international’s shot was straight at goalkeeper Lossl.

Burnley’s rhythm was interrupted by injury to Bardsley, who was replaced by Matt Lowton despite his best attempts to continue.

But the Clarets eventually unlocked the Huddersfield defence as the ball moved from Gudmundsson to Wood and on to Westwood, and then Barnes to send a composed finish beyond Lossl.

The teams were evened up numerically when Brady was sent off for a daft challenge he really didn’t need to make on Mbenza late on.

But Burnley survived the five minutes of stoppage time to record another important win.
